On August 27, 1927, five Canadian women petitioned to ask the Supreme Court: “Does the word ‘Persons’ in Section 24 of the British North America Act include female persons?” The judgement given on April 1928 read: “Understood to mean ‘Are women eligible for appointment to the Senate of Canada’, the question is answered in the negative.” This judgement was overturned on October 1929, and the first female senator, Cairine Reay Wilson, was appointed four months later.
