Susan B. Anthony votes (Nov. 5, 1872)
Anthony and fifty other women in Rochester, N.Y., attempted to vote in the presidential election that were held on November 5, 1872. Anthony was arrested two weeks later by a U.S. Deputy Marshal and charged with illegal voting. Anthony’s trial became a national controversy and was a major step in the transition of the women’s rights movement into the women’s suffrage movement.
