Martha Settle Putney (Nov. 9, 1916 – Dec. 11, 2008)
An American educator and historian who, after serving as one of the first black members of the Women’s Army Corps during World War II, devoted her life to researching and documenting the military service and achievements of black Americans. In an interview to CNN in 2004 said Putney: “It is my thesis that military integration made the basis for the emergence and the expansion of a black middle class.”
