September 8 is proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO since 1965. The day’s aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Some 775 million adults lack minimum literacy skills, two-thirds of them are women. UNESCO‚Äôs report clearly shows a connection between illiteracy and severe poverty and also between illiteracy and prejudice against women.
