Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
(Oct. 29, 1938– ) The 24th and current President of Liberia, since 2006 – the first elected female head of state in Africa. She served as Minister of Finance until the 1980 coup d’état, after which she had to leave Liberia and
held senior positions at various institutions, including the World Bank and the UN. The “Economist” described her as “arguably the best president the country has ever had”. In 2011, she was awarded the Noble Peace Prize.
