Elizabeth “Elsie” MacGill (March 27, 1905 – Nov. 4, 1980)
Known as the “Queen of the Hurricanes”, she was the world’s first female aircraft designer. In 1929, she became the first woman in the world to be awarded a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering. AsChief Aeronautical Engineer at Canadian Car and Foundry, she was responsible for producing and improving the Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft for the Royal Air Force. 1400 planes were manufactured under her supervision.
