The one-child policy in China has resulted in a significant gender imbalance, and the Chinese government considers it a major “threat to social stability”. Sheng-nu (“Leftover women”) is a Chinese derogatory term that classifies women who remain unmarried in their late twenties and beyond. In 2011, the governmental authority All-China Women’s Federation posted a controversial article titled “Leftover Women Do Not Deserve Our Sympathy”.
